I thought talent would be enough, Until I realized why so many great Actors stay invisible
There is a moment many actors never forget. A moment that quietly changes everything.
For me, that moment came when I saw Lupita Nyong'o win an Oscar for 12 Years as Slave. Just before that, I only knew her as the daughter of a famous Kenyan politician, Anya'ng Nyong'o. Suddenly, she was standing on one of the biggest stages in the world, holding an Academy Award in her hands while millions watched.
I was in Form 2 and something shifted inside me. For the first time, acting stopped feeling like a dream people only achieved in Hollywood or somewhere “far away.” It became real. Personal. Possible. A fellow Kenyan had done it. That meant maybe I could too.
From that day, I carried one prayer in my heart: One day, I will also put Kenya on the global map through acting. That dream pushed me toward acting school. I joined Africa Film and Television Talent Training Institute after high school, hungry to learn everything I could.
Honestly? Acting school humbled me fast. You think you understand acting until you sit in a classroom breaking down objectives, beats, emotional truth, camera language, scene study and character psychology.
I realized very quickly that what I thought was “good acting” was only surface level understanding. The school gave me foundations I will forever respect. It taught me professionalism. It taught me industry language. It taught me discipline.
In Swahili, we say acting school “inakutoa ushamba.” Meaning: it removes ignorance and that matters. No serious producer, casting director or filmmaker trusts an actor who does not understand the craft.
After graduating with my diploma, reality introduced itself, fast.
I went for auditions, met with producers, talked to directors and also tried networking.
I tried self tapes, tried “being patient", nothing moved, no breakthrough, no major opportunities, not even a magic call.
That is when fear started creeping in.
“How do you win an Oscar if you cannot even enter the industry?” That question changed my life because that is when I discovered a painful truth most actors are never told.
Talent is not the full game
This is the uncomfortable truth many actors secretly discover too late: Talent alone does not book roles.
You can be emotionally brilliant, you can cry on cue, perform Shakespeare beautifully, you can have years of training and still struggle financially, professionally and emotionally. Why?
Acting is not only an art. It is also a business.
Most actors are only trained for HALF the journey. That realization shocked me.
After years of studying, I honestly felt like acting school had only prepared me for about 25% of the real industry. Not because the training was bad, far from it. The craft training was essential.
